Letter R, Number 2, Circle, Black February 12th-16th
- CALENDAR-This week we have been focusing on the letter R, circle, the number 2, and the color black. Our friend Ravi Rhino helps us learn letter R's name & sound. This week, students will come home with a letter R written on their right hand with a toasted marshmallow scented black marker. This helps them know their right hand for flag salute and reinforces the letter and color they are learning. We also have been singing several letter R songs and a number 2 song that you can find below.
- PHONICS-This week along with the other phonics skills we continue to work on like rhyming, listening for beginning & ending sounds, blending onset & rimes we hear into whole words, and separating words we hear into onset & rime, we are reviewing our nursery rhymes.
- CIRCLE TIME-This week for our social skills activities we we will talk about the 12 Guiding Principles Word of the Week, "Adaptability". This week we are also continuing Rotations during circle time where students are split into three groups and do a letter review activity with Mrs. Schuler, a number writing and math activity with Mrs. McCoy, or a letter app on iPads. Students do one of the activities per day for 3 days so that every group gets to do each one.
- PRE-READING/WRITING-This week we will learn to build letter R with our wood pieces as well as write them on stamp & see screens. We will trace the letter R and number 2 in our handwriting books. We will also practice tracing our first names in all capital letters and will soon start tracing them on our letter crafts. We will also make our letter R craft into a Rain Cloud. This craft will work on our fine motor skills as we glue on cotton balls for the cloud and pinch a q-tip to dot blue rain drops. A letter craft will continue to come home each week as we rotate them out of display here at school. These are great review for students as they learn their letters so if you want an easy way to keep them they could be 3-hole punched and put into a binder to make a letter craft book. Students will also color and bring home a Ravi Rhino book this week that is also great review for letter R. If you save their letter books they will have a whole alphabet book library for review over summer for Kindergarten! Number 2 books will also come home this week, if you hang onto them you will have a set of number books 1-10 for summer review as well.
- MATH-Math is imbedded daily into activities that we do. Our calendar time involves learning our colors, shapes, and counting and learning our written numerals. While playing during centers, teachers interact with students and encourage counting, sorting, and comparing sizes and shapes. Students also do a math activity and focus on the number of the week during their math rotation at circle time and do other various activities to build different math skills.
