MR. POTATO HEAD CLASS EXPECTATIONS
In our Preschool Classroom, Mr. Potato Head helps to teach us how to follow class expectations with our whole body. Our body can help us to make thumbs up choices!
- Looking Eyes-We always make sure we are using our eyes to look. If someone says our name or is talking to us, we look at them. If it is carpet time we look at the teacher when she is teaching. If we are walking, we look where we are going.
- Listening Ears-We always have our listening ears turned on so that we can follow directions the first time! This helps us learn and stay safe!
- Kind Mouth-We always use a kind mouth at school. Sometimes using a kind mouth means using nice words when talking and not mean words. Other times a kind mouth is quiet when someone else is talking to us or we are walking in the hallway.
- Helping Hands-We always use helping hands at school. Helping hands clean up when it is time. We also keep our helping hands to ourselves in line or at the carpet so that our friends and ourselves can pay attention and stay safe. We also use hands that help each other when playing and never hurt each other.
- Safe Feet-We always use safe feet no matter where we are. When we are inside, walking feet are what is safe. when we are sitting at the carpet, we sit criss-cross applesauce so that our friends won't trip over our legs or we don't accidentally kick someone, this keeps everyone safe.
- Sitting On Bottom-We always sit on our bottom whether we are at the carpet, in our chairs, or going down a slide at recess. This keeps us safe.
- Thinking Cap On-Our thinking cap is our brain inside our head, we use it to make smart choices with the rest of our body!
- Nose To Yourself-We focus on ourselves and what we can do to make sure we make good choices. It is not our job to worry about what our friends are doing, our teachers will make sure they follow directions. Our nose stays out of others' business and stays on ourselves.

RESPONSIBILITY CENTERED DISCIPLINE
All of Jayhawk uses a program called, Responsibility Centered Discipline (RCD) to deal with unwanted behaviors. For young children the program involves using discipline mats. We have a red mat, a yellow mat, and a blue mat. The red mat is where a child sits if they are too angry to communicate with an adult, throwing a tantrum, or refusing to follow directions. They sit on the red mat until they are calm and ready to talk with an adult. This puts the responsibility of their behavior on them. They sit as short of time or as long of time as it takes to become under control and talk with a teacher. Once they are calm and ready, a teacher talks with them about the choices they were making and what they could do to make it better. They then move to the yellow mat to think about their choices. When they are ready to make a good/thumbs up choice they move to blue and discuss with the teacher what they should do to make good choices. Then they are ready to return to their regular classroom routine.
